In our 40s and 50s, we begin to experience the naturally frustrating effects of blurry near vision and turn to readers for help. This near vision loss is called presbyopia. With time, the eye’s natural lens becomes too stiff to focus up close. As a result, words and other nearby objects are blurry. Presbyopia eventually happens to everyone.
Cornerstone Eye Associates is proud to be the first practice in Rochester to offer exciting FDA-approved technology that can free you from the burden of reading glasses.
KAMRA®
The KAMRA® Inlay sits in the first few layers of the eye known as the cornea. Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, the inlay is a mini-ring with an opening in the center. By using this pinhole effect, the inlay focuses light coming into your eye. This restores near vision while maintaining your distance vision.
The Procedure
The entire KAMRA® inlay procedure will typically take less than 20 minutes and is performed in one eye. Dr. Hanuch will use numbing eye drops to ensure the procedure is painless and comfortable. Some patients feel slight pressure during the time where the laser is used to create a pocket for the inlay but only lasts a few moments. The inlay is then placed within the opening and centered over the pupil.
Recovery
Adhering to the doctor’s postoperative instructions will accelerate your healing progress. Once the numbing drops wear off, the eye may feel irritated or scratchy and patients may also experience excessive tearing or light sensitivity. This is normal, and we will provide medications to help manage these symptoms. Most patients resume normal activities and return to work within 24-48 hours.
By the end of the first week following the procedure, many people begin to notice improvement in their near vision. However, it is important to remember that the amount and pace of near vision improvement varies by individual. For some, the improvement is quick and dramatic, while other patients will experience gradual improvement. In order to develop your near vision results be sure to:
Who is a candidate for KAMRA®?
KAMRA is a great option for those patients desiring more independence from reading glasses. Individuals with good distance vision and who only require reading glasses between the powers of +1.25 and +2.50 are ideal candidates. For patients who also wear correction for distance vision, LASIK or PRK can be performed first, followed by implanting the KAMRA® Inlay as soon as the same day.
Dr. Omar Hanuch was recently invited to Good Day Rochester to talk about exciting reading vision correction treatments. Cornerstone Eye Associates is the first and only to offer KAMRA Inlay in Monroe County that is FDA-approved to help patients get rid of their readers.
